ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry underlined the need for establishing a truly democratic and rights-based polity for ensuring social stability and harmony in the country, according to a statement issued here on Wednesday

In a meeting with a delegation of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), headed by its President Yasin Azad, the chief justice recounted the epic lawyers struggle in the wake of March 09, 2007. He appreciated the fact that the struggle heralded the dawn of democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism in the country.

The chief justice greeted the newly-elected SCBA cabinet and discussed various difficulties and hardships being faced by litigants and lawyers. The meeting discussed issues related to fixation of cases and decided to facilitate lawyers, especially those hailing from Quetta and Karachi.

The meeting also discussed the working of local commissions formed at the district courts for the purpose of recording evidence. The issue would be further discussed in the next meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee, the statement said.

The bar members invited the chief justice to be the chief guest at the National Seerat Conference on the occasion of Eid Miladun Nabi. The chief justice agreed to the proposal and even extended an offer to use the auditorium of the Supreme Court for the auspicious occasion.  The meeting also offered fateha for the recent demise of senior lawyers Nasrullah Wariach, Talib Rizvi, Asif Bhatti and Mohsin Javed.
